Modern Combat 5: Blackout is a fast-paced, story-driven mobile FPS that draws strong inspiration from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. As one of Gameloft’s flagship titles, it combines the thrill of cinematic single-player missions with the accessibility of mobile free-to-play design. Set in a world of high-tech military conflict, the game features an arsenal of modern and futuristic weaponry, allowing players to immerse themselves in explosive set-pieces across various locations.
The core of the experience lies in its chapter-based story mode, delivering tightly scripted, action-heavy missions designed to rival console shooter campaigns—impressive, considering its mobile platform.

My Role in the Project
Modern Combat 5 gameplay.
During the early days of my game design career at Gameloft Indonesia, I had the opportunity to contribute to Modern Combat 5—a title that was already well-established and part of Gameloft’s liveOps portfolio. At the time, our studio was primarily focused on porting and sustaining large-scale projects across platforms. Being assigned to this title, even in a support capacity, was a big deal.
My contribution centered on mapping out the Android gamepad control layout. This task might sound small on paper, but it taught me a lot about what makes or breaks the moment-to-moment gameplay in a shooter.

Key Takeaways
Working on Modern Combat 5 was a formative experience. It was my first hands-on contribution to a globally recognized title and offered a front-row seat to how large-scale mobile games are maintained and improved post-launch.
Even with a focused scope—working on gamepad controls—I learned the value of user-centric design, iteration, and how even minor design touches can ripple through the player experience. It also helped me build confidence and gain insights into production workflows within a veteran studio like Gameloft.
Looking back, it remains one of those rare projects that I’m truly proud to have been a part of.
